One of the keys to a successful relationshipis making sure your pet approves of your partner.

Katherine Schwarzenegger recently made this important introduction between her beloved rescue dog Maverick and fiancéChris Pratt.

“I was definitely a little bit nervous about it because, you know, Maverick means a lot to me, and it is super important in my life that he loves him, so it worked out well,” the author, 29, told PEOPLE about the meeting at the world premiere ofthe new IMAX filmSuperpower Dogs.

It’s good news that this introduction went well, because Maverick isn’t just Schwarzenegger’s buddy, he is also her co-author. Schwarzenegger wrote about adopting the dog in her children’s bookMaverick and Me.

Maverick was one of seven puppies Schwarzenegger and her sister fostered. The sisters found six of the puppies homes, but Schwarzenegger had trouble letting Maverick go, so she ended up adopting the pup herself.

“We found them all amazing homes and it was such a rewarding experience, and I got Maverick and fell in love with him because he just had something different about him,” she said of the bringing the dog into her life. “He has been such a joy and blessing in my life, and just learning more about animal rescue and dog adoption has been so interesting for me, and such a passion for me.”

Along with writing her children’s book about adopting Maverick, Schwarzenegger is working on finding other ways to celebrate the joy of pet adoption. Schwarzenegger recently teamed up with Pedigree andSuperpower Dogsfor a national campaign called “Every Pup’s Superpower.” As part of this program, Pedigree and Schwarzenegger are asking dog owners to post on social media what their pooch’s superpowers are with the hashtag #EveryPupsSuperpower. For each post with this hashtag, Pedigree will donate one bowl of dog food to a shelter in need.
