Seriously , how the heck do they do it ? I suspect that there are tons of screenwriters working for grown - up alive - action display who would dearly love to hunt down Pendleton Ward and the rest of his gang of lunatics to pick up their arcanum . Last night ’s two - part season premiere render just how far Adventure Time has arrive in combine the show ’s majuscule giddiness with a mythos that ’s been buzz off deeper and more wakeless bit by bit .

On a running level , last night ’s Adventure Time maintained the mythos / comedy divide jolly equally , by sending Finn and Jake in different directions . The two heroes follow the Lich , who ’s possessing the organic structure of the great poor boy Billy , into a kind of cosmic cube , where wishes get granted . The Lich wishes for the extinguishing of all life on Earth — but luckily , Finn and Jake are good as long as they ’re in the block . So Finn like , in round , for the Lich never to have existed .
We see the upshot of Finn ’s want toy out over the course of both episodes , while Jake remain behind in the square block since he has n’t made his wish . And meanwhile , there ’s comedy . Some of the comedy come in in the Finn chronological sequence — cranky old Marceline is hilarious even as she ’s also super sad . The Destiny Gang are sort of a nutty travesty of the sort of post - apocalyptic gang that you see in so many 1980s pic , with their fruity shades and their attempts to start mode trends . Like diadem pant !
But you have to look up to the way of life the sequence ratchets up the tension of what ’s going to happen to Finn while meanwhile show Jake doing what he does ripe : partying like a fool . Jake wishes for a sandwich instead of some Brobdingnagian cosmic variety , and this somehow proves that he ’s altruistic or just extremely chill . Jake winds up partying in the red-hot tubful with the wish - granting guy cable and the Cosmic Owl , and by the end of the installment , they ’re all besties even though Jake thinks that the wish - granting guy really want a girlfriend . As so often seems to be the case , Jake relieve the day just by being a decent guy rope and receive extremely lucky . The Lich ’s indirect request gets retool from “ the extinction of all living on Earth ” to “ Finn and Jake go home . ”
When are we going to get to the bottom of this uncanny account about the apocalypse ? And will the results be simultaneously as desolate and as hilarious as last Nox ’s two - parter ? Paws crossed !
