The Last Jedi wasa right Star Wars movie . That there were faults , there is no doubt . But I need to brush aside the rest of the movie , the goodness and the high-risk — to talk about one character , Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo .
First of all , if you want someone to convey unabashed leadership with a side of well - deserved ridicule for heady hotheads that take chances the achiever of an entire resistance — Laura Dern is your fair sex .
Though the character ’s entrance into the film matte up sudden ( I think I would ’ve liked to see some kind of establishment of her authorization and soundness , either in an parenthesis with Leia , or with her establish some sort of decree prior to her wear leading ) , it quickly became apparent that she was the cold , ordered leader the Resistance need at the here and now . She was also quite peradventure the only one who could resist Poe ’s attempts to wrest control of the fleet ( which probably would have essay even more fateful than his underhand program did ) .
I perish back and forward on Holdo throughout the film — at first enraged and confused at her plain unfitness or involuntariness to take action . How could this be the skillful course of action ? How could we be asked to hold off when things were falling to stag , everything seemed hopeless , and she ’s apparently writing off one of the audience ’s favorite characters ( Poe ) ? It all appeared so jerky .
But ultimately she did have a program , and aboveboard , one that would have in all probability worked had Finn and Rose not been betrayed by DJ . pick up Holdo ’s strategy was a relief to me — she did make love what she was doing , we should have trusted her . It was a pull the moving-picture show root for off well , moving Holdo from someone who actively come out to be working against the Resistance ’s honorable interests , to someone who we should have had religious belief in from the start .

I can still see it in my mind — like a lightning deadbolt that leaves an imprint on your visual sense after it get over the sky . The streak through dark space . The arrant muteness of altruistic self - forfeiture . We were alone with Holdo in the ship , in the void of space , and then — that muteness . The theater may have gasped out loudly , but I only processed the quietness and the light source . Raw power and terrible beauty , blindingly compound in a individual shot .
I ca n’t remember too many other tantrum that play with the combination of action and silence like that . Perhaps there was something remindful of the tenseness of No Country for Old Men mixed with Kubrick ’s power to practice muteness to stun . This was just the most emotionally reverberative action sequence I ’ve experience . you may make as big of an explosion as you want , but if it does n’t sense big , it does n’t count . This was sacrifice on a cosmic scale , and you all-fired well felt it . And almost before we realized what was happening , the deed was done .
Holdo ’s last moment was quite literally the spark that lit the fervor . A humble heroical act by a relatively unknown ( at least to us ) character that reveals the nature of those who truly trust in the Resistance , its penury to survive , and its desire for good in the galaxy . Heroes come in all shapes and sizes . They may have many note or few . They may be well - liked or misunderstood . It does n’t matter . Heroes are not defined by their setting , but by their actions , and what Holdo does in that one , stunning moment define her character , not only as a hero , but as a total badass .
