Though Alien : Covenant was basically met with the interview equivalent of a shrug , managing director Ridley Scott has plans for at least one more Alien prequel film , witha script already in hand . We have no approximation where the tale is heading next . But as fanatical Alien fans , we have some suggestions … and some demands .
Before we get into that , of course , we must acknowledge that there ’s no telling what the be book is about ( or what it ’s titled , thoughAlien : Awakening is the hearsay du jour ) . We do know it will continue the prequel serial come out by Prometheus and Covenant . Depending on how many more Prometheus sequels Scott has planned — he ’s saidhe envisions three amount , which would meantwo more after Covenant — the next film might not even be the direct link to Alien that would logically be the end point in time of these prequels . But it ’s hard to say how much Scott really has locked in , and how much could alter . ( think back when he allege Alien : Covenantwas proceed to be titled Alien : Paradise Lost ? ) This is the guy who took notewhen fans kvetch about the alien - lessPrometheus , and made sure that its subsequence was overflowing with vicious monsters — so perhaps he ’ll take gillyflower after Covenant and set as needed . Here ’s what we think he should reckon .
Make the third prequel be the last prequel
This is n’t what Scott wants . But a single really good movie pass water a lot more sense than two more half-hearted accounting entry take up to one of the smashing scifi movies of all time . A self-aggrandising reason we ’re so concerned in the prequels is seeing how they lay the base for Alien . Sure , they have presented some interesting ideas of their own ( and showed us , for instance , that it ’s potential to self - administer a caesarian section ) but it ’s clip to research on the button how the plots and type of Prometheus and Covenant will link up with the doomed crew of the Nostromo . Even if it ’s just a passing mention of LV-426 in the very last injection of the next movie , it ’s sentence for some payoff .
Don’t make David the focus of the story
The obvious post - Covenant patch would be to watch over glib synthetic human David on the next branch of his mass - murdering tour of the beetleweed . Michael Fassbender ’s dual carrying into action as David and his much more fair lookalike Walter was telling — not to mention a cool mirroring of the big android / good android duality established by Ash and Bishop in Alien and Aliens . David / Walter rule Covenant and patch system of logic suggests Fassbender will repay for a third film — but he should n’t be the hint this time around . This might just be personal bias , but once he ’s done doing whatever he ’s gon na do to Daniels , the colonists , and whoever else is unlucky enough to fall under his ascendency , David needs to perish in some horrific way that secure he ’s gone eternally . ( Because , recall , merely chopping off his header is n’t enough . )
Show us something different
One of the criticism of Covenant was that it feel too conversant . Its boogeyman - pick - off - humans - one - by - one plot echoed not only Alien and Aliens , but also the dozens of scifi horror movies in that vein that’ve come out since the original two . Why not shift the action somewhere that does n’t experience so familiar ( a Weyland - Yutani corporate station ? An intergalactic settlement that has more of a urban center flavour ? Some lamentable corner of scourge - futurity Earth ? ) and convey in some character reference that do n’t feel like repeats of ones we ’ve already encounter ? Say what you will about Alien 3 and Alien : Resurrection , but at least they took risks with their configurations and the types of novel characters they usher in .
Stay heavy on the horror
In keep with Scott ’s desire to please Alien lover who were let down by the more somber Prometheus , Covenant feel almost jubilantly butcherly . It may not have pleased everyone who was look for a film as bright craft as Alien , but as a repulsion buff , it ’s almost always the eccentric that “ space devil on a kill - crazy rampage ” is basically a foolproof formula for a honest time at the flick . Imagine if Covenant had married its tense Energy Department and geysers of blood with a much more square story . That should be something the next film in the series makes every effort to accomplish .
Leave some mysteries unexplained
Prometheus , and peculiarly Covenant , devoted quite a few script pages to explaining where the Xenomorphs came from . We love more than we ever expected to , and probably much more than we needed . The next plastic film should n’t ignore what was revealed in Covenant , but it should sharpen more on promote the story and less on the weird scientific discipline behind its championship creature . Is n’t it scarier when you do n’t acknowledge where the monster came from — or what it might morph into next ?
Consider doing a sequel instead
Okay , we know this is decidedly not on the table . But why not make a short film join Covenant and Alien ( like this one connecting Prometheus and Covenant ) and just make a full - distance sequel rather ? dress it after Aliens , specify it after Alien : Resurrection , go down it whenever the hell on earth you desire , Ridley Scott . Also , Alien : waking up sure enough sounds like the perfect championship .
