This hebdomad , Gizmodo University is majestic to have a very extra , super - surreptitious guest lecturer ! This is presented in plus to our normal curriculum and in conjunctive with Sparkle Labs so tread on into socio-economic class and see who we ’ve fetch !
Good good afternoon class . As you know , we were schedule to begin Discover Electronics workweek 3 : Sensors and Transistors . Well , that ’s not gon na go on . We have something good today , a little additional bang for your buck . In lieu of our regularly schedule program , we proudly submit Collin Cunningham from Makezine.com . He ’ll be taking taking you on a brief roundup of central concepts we ’ve cover so far before introducing some new electronic devices !
First up , let ’s take a another look at the LED , the Resistor , and Ohm ’s Law .

The LED
MAKE present : The LEDfrommake magazineonVimeo .
The Resistor
MAKE nowadays : The Resistorfrommake magazineonVimeo .
Ohm’s Law
Alright , now that we ’ve inflate our agreement of these basic concepts , allow ’s move onto some Modern material ; specifically , the inductance , the diode , the electrical condenser and the transistor .
The Inductor
That ’s an amazing little piece of technology . Who would have thought that a simple coil of wire around an branding iron shaft could be used to not only create an electromagnetic field of operations but do so many other useful social occasion as well ? From smooth out voltage spikes to the wireless transmission of current , the inductance is a pretty handy gadget , would n’t you say ?
The Diode
The simplest of semiconductor unit , it ushered in the age of radio . It ’s the electronic valve that rectifies and regulates , the rectifying valve ! Think of it as a one path valve for charge .
The Capacitor
MAKE presents : The Capacitorfrommake magazineonVimeo .
The Capacitor : some are smaller than a dime bag , others are big than your clenched fist . They ’re simple in design and all sort of utilitarian for storage , timing , and filtration . With or without an oscilloscope , diddle around with them and see what you’re able to make !
The Transistor
The Transistor is a gadget used to electronically switch and amplify signals by harnessing the alone abilities of semiconductor material . Do n’t concern if you do n’t fully follow the possibility behind how it works , we ’ll be cover it again in a later lecture .
That ’s it for this week . We hope that these concepts are a small flake more clear and a little less daunting with the extra recapitulation . We ’ll be back next hebdomad with lesson 3 : detector and Transistors ( really ! ) so be sure to do your prep over atLearn.SparkleLabs.com .
