Every summer , there ’s at least one huge - budget film that blow $ 200 million or so on ho-hum natural action , unfunny jokes , weird racial stereotype and bloated exceptional effects sequence . And plainly this summer , it ’s officially Battleship . The “ wet Transformers ” movie has come out a whole month early in the U.K. , which think that a rash of British review are already out . Here ’s a abbreviated sum-up of some of the salient points … including aliens who are quite mayhap Taiwanese . ( George Lucas , call your attorney . )
The Playlistsays it ’s a boring film with dull performances . Money quote :
But we think that even the brains - off crowd will struggle to find anything to savour here . The film is so overlong ( 130 min ) and sluggishly paced that the heartbeat never gets lift , and the effects never calculate anything other than plasticky ; a panorama that nods to “ Titanic ” is less convincing than James Cameron ’s fourteen - year - old film , and the alien look like a “ Halo ” cut setting with their helmet on , and like McG , of all masses , with them off .

The Times of Indiafeels like the alien are too silly . Money quote :
The Aliens which are always the most interesting part of any skill fiction motion picture too allow the moving-picture show down . They do not intrigue or scare you ; they add further comic relief , given their strain Taiwanese features and husk like beard . Of the many sub - plots , nothing make an impingement on you . You feel indifferent towards the character … bread and butter , utter , aliens . Alex ’s rapport with his protective brother , light-haired girl , her uptight dreamer father and finally the aliens , all looks wacky and theatrical .
SFX says it ’s a bit lukewarm , although the final set piece is genuinely cool and clever . Money quotation :

Impressive outcome succession , ingeniously entertaining nod to the secret plan and self-colored performances ( not that singer Rihanna is really need to work at any peak ) battle against a plot that deign into setpieces and cliché . The handwriting unconvincingly seek to justify some brain - curdling dialogue ( “ have ’s buy this satellite another day ” ) with postmodern winks ( “ Do the great unwashed really say that ? ” ) . The aliens are also rather vapid , though there is a spirited attack to portray them as person .
Hey U Guys is perhaps the most damnatory , say it ’s literally transformer on the ocean . Money inverted comma :
Peter Berg ’s battlewagon flitter between disorient action flick and outright adoption of Michael Bay as Lord and Saviour . Taylor Kitsch gives everything to try and deliver the goods our heart despite the paper slender character and cut down and paste dialogue he and every other persona inherits from the last two decennium of chest clump , patriotic cinema . The true crime here is that nothing young is hear and there is no ambition ; slow motion photography does not equal drama , the guitar twang of an American rock classic does not endear me to you , throw between the cold sullen blue sky of midnight , the bright burn of aurora and back to a wizardly subset to accommodate your lack for pretty backgrounds regardless of the actual sequence of effect sends signals to me that you do n’t trust me to even notice when the day does n’t run in the correct order .

The Telegraph says battlewagon is “ rotten but kind of knows it,”and at least it ’s not as reprehensible as Hasbro ’s G.I. Joe : The ascending of Cobra . And stuff does flub up real trade good . But at the same time :
While Berg may have had his sights set on trumping Michael Bay with all the fist - pumping heroic verse and deafening fusillade of flaming , his motion-picture show ’s so cloddishly prepare it ca n’t really deliver the goods .
What Culture says it fails introductory military action movie grammar . Money quote :

Few will require tight duologue from a motion-picture show like this , but it is n’t unreasonable to demand taut , visceral activity . Instead , Berg has no idea of balance or sustained threat ; in the picture show ’s first half , the invaders are positively tireless , yet without much of a variety of tactics in the 2d one-half , they are quite inexplicably weaken , queerly not blowing up Hopper ’s destroyer with the same efficiency they did the two ships during the gap attack . It is a classic action flick maneuver , but normally one veil at least slightly better than it is here … With the punishingly dull , endlessly monotonous Battleship , Peter Berg has hold the condition “ a poor man ’s Michael Bay ” credibility , and that ’s a shivery thing .
It ’s not all electronegative reviews , however . A few people were able to appreciate the motion-picture show for what it was , and there are a smattering of “ it does n’t take itself seriously , and it racket in its own fatuity ” reviews .
For example , Bleeding Cool thinks it ’s a good motion picture than you ’d expect . Money inverted comma :

believe how openly airheaded Battleship is , it ’s a very smart movie . You ’re going to see a mass of negatively charged reviews of Battleship , but you wo n’t see one from me . This is a film that set its sights low , and suck the hell out of them .
Den of Geek likewise feel the movie deliverswhat you wait from this sort of moving-picture show :
Battleship revels in its absurdity . Its heroes push aliens with sniper rifle and a 75 - year - old ship with a crew of wizened warhorse at the helm . And by the time its characters adjudicate down to act as what is effectively a scaled up reading of the Battleship control panel game – a aspect that , as derisory as it sounds , is quite exciting – it ’s hard not to be sweep up in the film ’s batty tempo .
