PresidentDonald Trumpis sharing his thoughts on global warming ahead of the arctic conditions expected in parts of the country this week.

In a message posted to Twitter on Monday, Trump, 72, claimed that we “need global warming” in order to prevent the extreme cold weather conditions from returning to the Midwest.

“In the beautiful Midwest, windchill temperatures are reaching minus 60 degrees, the coldest ever recorded. In coming days, expected to get even colder. People can’t last outside even for minutes,” hetweeted.

“What the hell is going on with Global Waming? [sic] Please come back fast, we need you!” Trump added.

Though he claimedglobal warmingwas necessary to fight off the frigid temperatures, in actuality, it’s part of what iscausingthe record-breaking cold weather.

According toNational Geographic, global warming is defined as the gradual increase of the Earth’s atmospheric temperature mostly due to the emission of heat-trapping greenhouse gases. Because the Earth’s climate is changing so rapidly, the environment is prone to extreme weather events, including these uncharacteristically cold winters.

As theAssociated Pressreported, “weather refers to the atmospheric conditions during a shorter period, whileclimate is a longer view of weather patterns.”

CNN has alsopreviously notedthat, according to climate scientists, linking temperatures in a certain location to the existence of global warming is an entirely inaccurate way to view global warming.

In response to his tweet, several users mocked the president for his incorrect words and misunderstanding of climate change versus weather.

“Weather isn’t climate. They teach this in 5th grade science,”wroteone person.

“It wasn’t even that long ago when Trump claimed that climate change didn’t exist because it was cold outside in Washington, DC. There is a huge difference between weather and climate that Trump just doesnt understand or intentionally misleads people,”addedsomeone else.

“how ridiculous are you? This is the most despicable thought I would have ever imagined from a world leader,”wroteanother user. “Your kind have ruined the planet for the coming generations and you use it as a throwaway line.”

This is not the first time that Trump has spoken out about his thoughts on global warming.

In December 2017, the presidentsuggested that global warming doesn’t exist— but, once again, thought it could help against the cold.

“In the East, it could be the COLDEST New Year’s Eve on record. Perhaps we could use a little bit of that good old Global Warming that our Country, but not other countries, was going to pay TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS to protect against,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “Bundle up!”

Despite Trump’s assertion, CNN reported that2016 was the hottest year on record, and the third consecutive year to rank hotter than all previous years, according to the World Meteorological Organization.

2018 came in at the fourth-hottest year on record, according to the United Nations’World Meteorological Organization.
