This week , Constantine aired what might be the show ’s final episode , a creepy-crawly story about otherworldly polygamous teenagers . But it ’s the episode ’s last few second that ups the stakes and has us hoping that Constantine return , perhaps with a bit of rebranding .
I will admit , I ’ve been a bit ambivalent about Constantine . Like a passel of shows , it get off to a rocky start , and it ’s had a hard time distinguish itself from other repulsion show . ( It does n’t help that some , like Supernatural , have more than a small Hellblazer in their DNA . ) But Matt Ryan has been outstanding all season , and , while they were broken up by that odd philosophical slasher flick , the last few instalment have done a lot to clarify the roles of the other nub and recurring character .
And even without Chas , this instalment , “ Waiting for the Man , ” made the show feel a bit more like an corps de ballet , with Zed interacting a corking softwood with Manny and wretched doomed Jim Corrigan , Gary commandeer a corpse to give John a monition , and Papa Midnite adjudicate to pile up a bounty La Brujería has place on John ’s head . Papa Midnite uphold to be brutal , charming , and practical , going after John not out of any sentience of vengeance or rivalry , but to loose his sister ’s mortal from Hell . And the possibility of Jim Corrigan becoming a host for the Spectre in the course of the show is an challenging one .
We ’ve seen in earlier episodes that the Rising Darkness stand for that sure type of conjuring trick have become stronger — the Romani woman ’s power over miners ’ spirits , Papa Midnite ’s accidental resurrections , the parent - hate spirit of a dead child . Apparently , legerdemain is turn up to help those who are not necessarily magical , but merely evil . The Man , our antagonist of the week , is a Virgo the Virgin - obsessed Satanist , one whose devotion to the Devil is lastly pay off . Rather than luring young daughter into his murder menage with his teamster hat and his cajun accent , he ’s able to send out his threesome of “ Bride , ” the spirit of the young lady he married and drink down . The dead girl are queerly devoted to him , and they cloud the mind of vernal Vesta ( what a name for a virgin ritual killing ! ) , seducing her with the hope that she ’ll never be alone . This is the face of dead on target evil : a valet who destroys the innocent for his own intimate joy .
There is a lot of genuine creepiness in this episode — the household that smell of rotten meat , with fly traps everywhere , the altar to Satan , the wedding annulus manufacturer , the remains of the dead girls insert into layer . What ’s horrifying is n’t the supernatural aspect itself ; it ’s that La Brujería ’s mystical meddling has made it easier for the Man to commit quotidian turn of evil . It ’s apposite this particular horrorshow end not with an dispossession but with gunshot . ( Although John does need a small incantation to free the souls of the murdered girls . )
This especially roughshod plotline is just one of the reasons I think that Constantine ( rumored to possibly be rebranded as Hellblazer ) might be better accommodate for Syfy than NBC . There are fortune of hints here of the dirtier , grittier show that Constantine can be — John ’s quaggy low legerdemain , where he electrocutes himself to trigger a vision , his invitation to Manny to “ oblige it for me ” — and after the large reveal , the show might be better on a communication channel where the writers get detached rein . After all the Manny bonding we got last week , this week ’s final consequence revealed the trueness about John ’s annoying angel chum : he ’s the mastermind behind La Brujería ’s Rising wickedness . All those saccharine speeches were manipulation , and John and Zed ’s engagement in the Rising Darkness is more complicated than it seems .
With this revelation comes the electric potential for a mickle more delicious outlandishness mixed in with Constantine ’s repugnance . We hope we get a chance to see it .
