A new species of squealer - like mammalian called a peccary has been discovered in the southeast Amazon realm of Brazil , a scientist announced today . It is the turgid musk hog in the world , about the size of it of a with child dog . The newly named beast ( Pecari maximus ) was found in the basinful of the Rio Aripuanã and reassert to be a distinct species via a inherited depth psychology conducted by the Leiden Centre for Environmental Sciences in the Netherlands . Though new to skill , local already screw about the beast . Tupi Indians called it Caitetu Munde , which have in mind " great peccary which survive in pairs . " Dutch life scientist Marc van Roosmalen of the University of Leiden late was doing some field sketch in the area and saw the unusual mammal . " One day I was look at some rapscallion , and I saw three peccary overtake in front of me totally silent , " van Roosmalen toldLiveScience . " They appeared and then disappeared without fix any noise . " " afterwards , I expect the local what I had seen , " he said . " It shows that you really have to see things and then ask the great unwashed what you ’ve see . They are not going to say you otherwise . It ’s normal to them . It turns out to be their most hunted creature . " The unexampled finding was put out in the Oct. 29 issue of the journalBonner zoologische Beitrage . Peccaries are hoofed animals closely related to swine and hippopotami . Until now , only three species were known to skill — the collared peccary , the white - lipped peccary and the Chaccoan peccary . measure of the new musk hog ’s soundbox and skull confirm that the novel species is larger than the other peccary mintage . The jumbo peccary has foresightful leg and its fur markings are completely unlike , van Roosmalen said . The newspeciesalso behaves differently from its household members , the snowy - lipped and collared peccaries . These species are very societal and find in great to very large group ( even up to hundreds of case-by-case animals in the slip of the white - lipped musk hog ) , while the jumbo musk hog is only found in pairs or in small family groups with one or two offspring . Also , the other peccary case settle down in the ground for come and roots . The giant musk hog eats mainly fruit and exhibits petty or no root behavior . The gargantuan musk hog has a secretory organ that is active in other peccary species and used to mark territories as well as each other . However , the new musk hog is scentless , van Roosmalen say . " I think it ’s another adaptation to depredation insistence from liberal computed tomography , " he said . " Through organic evolution , they can not afford to be so stinky as the other ones . " The home ground of the giant musk hog is limited to dry out wooded areas in a small region of the catchment area of the Rio Aripuanã . The researchers therefore expect the giant peccary universe to be pocket-size and recommend that this new mintage should be lay on the Red List of threatened specie of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources ( IUCN ) .
