From theNational Security Archive :

According to Agnew ’s anamnesis years later , they intercept at an airbase where he remark that German fighter - Italian sandwich were armed with atomic arm and that the German pilots had practical control over them under nuclear sharing system with the United States . Concerned about the possibleness of misguided or accidental atomic use , Agnew spoke to a new U.S. soldier who had responsibility for guarding the weapons and involve him what he would do if the German pilots come “ running out and they ’re gon na take off and no one has recite you that it ’s all ripe . ” The sentry was unsure , so Agnew advised him to stop the weapons with his gun : “ fritter away at those things and do n’t worry about it . ”
