Fernando Meirelles garnered award nomination for City Of God and The Constant Gardener . One thing that really strike me about the film was the way you used the tv camera to test and create a touch of disorientation with the camera going in and out of focus , and blurring into white and so on . How much did you experiment with that ?
To be honest , when I was hit the film , I remember I would go much further , that the film would be much more abstract . But then , when you have expectant histrion , it ’s very hard not to use them . Anyway , [ I like ] the idea of finding a different room of shooting some parts of the movie . Usually where you dart the film , you have the camera where the point of thought of the eccentric are , right ? You have the actor turning his fountainhead and appear at some dot , and you see where he ’s looking . In this film , the graphic symbol have no point of thought . How am I going to tell this write up if the theatrical role have no compass point of thought ? So that was the solvent . It came out very poetical , I conceive .
So most of the movie use up place in an asylum where the characters are trap , and it captures an amazing notion of claustrophobia , with the walls seeming to close in all the time . And yet , it ’s just a normal institutional space . How did you achieve that ?
We were very favourable to find that infinite . The quad where we shot the asylum is a prison actually , for mental prisoner . And it was empty , so we were very favorable to find this . What we did was just attempt to receive a good palette for the picture ’s gloss , and as the film progreses , we see that the Seth is degraded . So it gets dirtier and dirtier , and we planned for each scene how far should we go with the filth . The rampart should be dirty , and … That was all planned , even for the wardrobe and the composition . When we planed the film , we had three microscope stage for the degradation [ so that the scenery and costumes would twin for each scene in a discussion section of the film . ]
Did you ever debate how far to go with the filth and excreta and grossness ? In the book they ’re basically living in their own shit .
The Quran is much worse . I shot more degrading prototype … The first two or three cuts of the cinema were sour , you know . But then I felt that I did n’t need to go so far to deal my period , and at some detail the film catch too repellant , and you do n’t want to watch any more . So I tried to chance the veracious proportionality . I had the image , and I could go further , or I could just pull back . In the cutting room , that ’s where I honed it , where I decided where I would go … I really do n’t see any power point in lurid [ for its own sake . ] Have you seen a motion picture by Gaspar Noé calledIrreversible ?
I have n’t , no .
There ’s a scene with Monica Bellucci , where she ’s raped . It ’s a twelve hour chronological sequence of colza , and the tv camera is unshakable and it ’s very shocking . I retrieve watch this film with a big interview , and part of the audience leaving the theater because of that tantrum . It ’s a very not bad film , but some masses do n’t like it just because of that scene . I thought about Irreversible when I was making my film . really , I ’ve let the cat out of the bag to Gaspar flat , and he does n’t reckon that scene is a misunderstanding . But anyway , I mat up my first cut was very unbalanced .
Did you get any pressure from Miramax to make your photographic film less shocking ?
No . What really maybe shocked me was I did a exam screening in Toronto . It was the sixth cut . And we had around 500 people in the dramaturgy , and I guess 62 walked out . There were two rape scenes . In the first assault vista , there were four or five women who left , and in the 2d one a bunch of people just stick out up and left the dramaturgy . I was traumatize by that . I did n’t jazz it was so strong . After that I went back and said , “ I ca n’t have people walk out . ” That , to me , was the turn full stop . And then I show the film again at a second run screening in New York , and only a few women walked out in the rape view .
The screening in Toronto , was that the flick festival that just happened ?
No , it was before , it was in January . The film was n’t ready yet . I think the photographic film was quick , and then the repsonse was so half-baked , so many people leaving , I decide to recut . It was a problem of balance . Sometimes you have a film where more and more people leave behind the theater … but [ in this case ] it was only during the rapine setting . [ That imply ] I did n’t prepare them to get to the scene , or the scene is really too much .
And in the final baseball swing , the rape scenes are almost abstract .
Sometimes when you do n’t show things , [ and ] you only suggest , it ’s much stronger than demonstrate , correct ?
One thing about the rape sequence that was really interesting was the theatrical role of the comptroller , who was born unsighted . He ’s one of the principal organizers of the colza prospect . And he stress to act all gentlemanly and knightly towards the women he ’s helping to mob rape , spill the beans to them politely throughout . That ’s not really in the book . Where did that come from ?
It ’s creepy , is n’t it ? The lines that he ’s saying there . Maury Chaykin , who plays the accountant , thought of this bozo assay to be kind . He came up with his lines , it was improvised . At first , when I heard , I laughed a lot like it was a caper , but then when I cut the voices , the lines , for the film , I palpate it was really creepy .
Another thing that really jumped out at me is at the start of the moving-picture show , the car thief , who ’s toy by screenwriter Don McKellar , pronounce everyone should kiss up to him . It seems like he add up close to becoming the Rex of Ward 1 , but then everyone decline his leadership and put the medico and his wife in charge instead . This was much unattackable in the movie than in the record book , I felt . Were you try out to suggest that Ward 1 could well have gone the same means as Ward 3 , which descend into barbarism ?
He did n’t have a gun [ so he could n’t take charge , like the other guy in Ward 3 . ] In the book , in the beginning , you sense that [ the motorcar thief is ] going to be the bad guy , but then he dies and there ’s this other bozo that comes . There ’s one idea from the book for this character that we used in the motion picture , and I cerebrate it ’s the main idea of this role . In the book , he say at some point that after he hold up unreasoning he was able-bodied to recall well . He was capable to understand the things he ’s seen . It ’s like a paragraph . In the leger , we used that line , when Julianne Moore comes to see him in bottom . He aver , “ I can see better now , I can aid . ” His ideas are much clearer . For me , this makes sense . I did some workshops of cecity just to see how it feel . I used a blindfold for hour and hours , with a radical that was fix to be extras in the plastic film . It ’s awe-inspiring how , after a few hour with a blindfold , you really mean different , you are more in touch with yourself . I think visual modality is very distracting . After four or five hours of walk with a blindfold and having to touch things , and relate to the great unwashed only by touching them not by verbalise or realize . For me it was very pleasant . But anyway , when the thief sound out , “ I ’m a better mortal . I think better , ” I understand what he ’s saying . I felt like I could feel my feelings best .
How hard was it to shoot all those scenes at the end , with the street of the city filled with refuse and disoriented unreasoning mass ?
We take that in Sao Paolo , where I be . We wanted the film to be placed in a big city , but very generic , [ one ] that multitude would n’t distinguish . It was very easy to shoot here , and we were able to convince the traffic section to remove the street so we could take . It was a handsome functioning , but I think it came out very well . The film just came out a few weeks ago in Sao Paolo and it ’s been a huge success . The movie is really expectant in Brazil .
Some activistic groups for the blind have protested your film because of a negative portrayal of unreasoning multitude . What do you think about that ?
I empathize their concerns , but I really do n’t harmonise with their detail of view . This is not a celluloid about blind people , it is about human nature . All the blind masses in the cinema are not blind like the blind multitude in that association . They ’re people who have gone unsighted and had no time to adapt . The only unsighted mortal in the film , who is Maury Chaykin , is very well adapted and efficient . The most efficient mortal in the psychiatric hospital is Maury Chaykin , who is able to organise the radical and feed everybody . The others are people who have lost their wad , and had no time and no conditions to cook . There are so many brilliant artists and scientists and business community who are blind … I never thought this account could be criticized .
It feels like Julianne Moore ’s character is the emotional shopping mall of the cinema , even more than in the book .
I think she ’s stronger in the film . I harmonise with you .
How did that follow about ?
Well , you call Julianne Moore , and you have it . She was really commited and engaged . It ’s amazing the way of life she spring into a project , with all her consistency , soul and mind …
In the leger , the Dr. and his wife have a really strong jazz relationship . In the flick , though , they do n’t seem to get along that well . Why the change ?
In the book , from the outset they ’re a span that works well , and I try out to produce a sort of arc for this couple . In the beginning , they ’re not in a crisis , but it ’s not a great marriage ceremony . He really does n’t see her , and she does n’t see herself as well , she ’s kind of a limited lady of the house . Her world revolves around him and he ’s a bit arrogant and in controller . And little by small , when they move to the asylum , she has become the leader , and petty by short he lose his leadership . And he has to be occupy charge of by her . It ’s like he ’s being castrated by her . That ’s our persuasion . Maybe he makes passion with the girl with colored crank just because he was feeling like he ’s being emasculate , his male person - hood was being challenged . But in the goal after this journey and distress , he find out to see her . He ’s less unsighted . He says to [ his married woman ] , “ I remember , you ’re beautiful , I see you , ” it ’s a beautiful line at the last . In the book , the story of the brace is kind of flat , so we tried to create an arc for them , so he learns to see her . And she learns to see that she ’s much more than what she thought . in reality , for all the character I tried to create bow like this , that are n’t in the book .
One of the really come upon things about the Quran , stylistically , is the way all the dialog die hard together , with everybody talk at once . Often there are just commas separating lots of pieces of dialog and you have to pretend who ’s spill . How do you convey that on film ?
In the Word , it ’s very short lines , right ? He writes very short lines and very lineal . We tried to slue the film the same fashion , with short cuts , very cutted , very disconnected . In some ways this mirrors the style of the [ Good Book ] , but it was more of a conjunction , I have to say . I just shot it and cut the way I do .
Finally , one thing I got very strongly from the film was the signified that multitude can create societal order in all sort of bizarre and indefensible situations . Like we mention originally , with the railroad car stealer who you mean is going to take over in Ward 1 , but he does n’t have a gun .
And he does n’t have the guts .
Or the gumption . So it does n’t take that much to turn Ward 1 into Ward 3 . And that ’s part of why the people in Ward 1 take Ward 3 as being in charge .
We have really the capacity of accommodate , like cockroaches . We adjust very fast . It ’s amazing . We get used to crises .
And that ’s not always a just thing .
It ’s not tough , it ’s not right . It ’s how we are . We learn to adjust . The plastic film ’s come up out in a very interesting point to me . Today , waiting the approval of this [ bailout ] package in the American Congress , my champion said , “ The world is weaiting for this , everybody is going to go crazy . ” But then I ask him , “ What happens if Congress does n’t approve this software package ? ” He said , “ Well it ’s cash in one’s chips to be a disaster . But we ’ll adapt . We ’ll discover a way . ” We always observe our way .
