There ’s an elite list of British men and woman who ’ve gone into distance in the real macrocosm , but in the fictional one at least , one humanity reigns above all : Wallace , the humble claymation inventor whose very first adventure , A Grand Day Out , made its debut at the British Short Film Festival 35 age ago today . As we get ready to return to the wacky world of Wallace and his cuspid companion Gromit inVengeance Most Fowl , it ’s amazing to see how far the duo have come … and yet despite all that , it’sA Grand Day Outthat remains the series ’ strongest link to the world of sci - fi , more than any crazy gadget Wallace comes up with ever could .
In the three and a one-half decades betweenGrand Day OutandVengeance Most Fowl , trivial has really changed inWallace & Gromit‘s idyllic theatrical of quaint , charmingly British life . For all the gizmos that Wallace has come up with over the geezerhood — from dog - walking robot to home mechanization , from transform bike - planer to an in - house wool manufacturing business concern — his technical Earth is still for the most part an analogue one . Computers be in some form , but closer to the style of giant banks of machines from the ’ 70s and ’ 80s . If someone wants to call someone , they border a land line , rather than a mobile phone , and the cyberspace does n’t really exist . Even in the serial ’ late escapade , the only real acquiescence to the contemporary is Wallace ’s latest invention , Norbot the Smart Gnome , which still feels like an evolution ofWallace & Gromit‘s sideways approach to our increasingly technical school - suffused lives , rather than attempt to wreak catch up with how our world has gain .
Which is why it still remains brilliantly mirthful that the first thing we see Wallace ever do as an consultation is build up an real functioning rocket ship in his basement . A Grand Day Outis arguably the mostexplicitly skill fabricated entryinWallace & Gromit — the duo construct a space ship , jet off to the moon , and encounter artificial , alien life sentence — and yet it run aground itself in a layer of absurdist surreality that position the stage for the fantasy version of Britain that the series would go on to both charmingly inhabit and turn itself into an international , cross - cultural exchange of British - ism . We ’re never take to oppugn the how s and why s of Wallace and Gromit building a rocket out of Natalie Wood , chip alloy , and the plan documents of a man still lick in stick figures . The desire is not rooted in a pauperism to research the unknown or show some grand scientific dreaming , but because Wallace earnestly believe that the moon is made out of cheese , and build up a roquette to go there and get some is somehow a much more reasonable response to recognise you ’re almost out of Wensleydale than go bad around the nook to the shops would be .

And when they do get there , not only are they proven right in that laying claim — and do n’t have to worry about thing like air or artificial gravity , outside of one specific , uproarious joke of Wallace sound off a bollock into the atmosphere and it not coming back down — everything is just taken in Wallace and Gromit ’s chipper strides . There ’s no real awe to what they achieve inA Grand Day Out , other than that they want some cheese , and they acquired some : thatis what matters , rather than casually breaking terra firma in distance exploration . Even when they receive foreign life , in the form of the coin - engage golem mad that they did n’t clean up after themselves , beyond initial mistake it ’s not some wonderful mystery to be solved . If anything , again , the fact that the short concludes with the now seemingly sentient robot having discovered the joys of skiing from a vacation mag Wallace left lying around is treated with a matter of factness that ca n’t help but be fantastically magical .
It is in this surrealist charm that Wallace and Gromit has boom , not just as an institute of British life and culture , but in how it ’s get by to successfully and more and more distance itself from the dissonance of our advanced technological world , even as its advancing premises preserve to stretch the reality of its titular artificer . In many ways , our human beings is already beyond even some of the raging inventions Wallace could muster . But where else could he have gone if his first ever picnic took him to the stars and back ?
